What's new

I'm thinking of...

PETA... Oh Please!
talk about out of touch with reality. I love animals and have dogs and cats. PETA has no balance.

In our town we have a program.."meals on wheels"
It delivers meals to shut in's. You visit with these people when you bring a meal to them.. Their stories are of the greatest generation and worth listening to.. very rewarding to bring a smile to their day!

I support the Aussie Cancer Council by being a member of a monthly donation thingie.
Im also a member of Amnesty International. Ive been supporting them for many years. I used to get involved with letter writing and funding at school/uni when I was younger, now I just donate.

mm I havent had time to read the other posts..but I volenterd at a place that works with blind/old/partially sited people, and it was greatly rewarding.

Peta's agenda is waaaaaaaaaaay too wacky for me, thanks. :|

I haven't eaten meat or used leather products for 5 years, and even I find some of peta's view too radical. But I still support them as a whole (mentally but not monetarily) just because of the attention they bring to some of the issues.

As for volunteering, as some already know, I volunteer 5 hours a week for a local photography gallery. If I had more time, I would also like to volunteer perhaps at the humane society or preferably a no-kill shelter, or maybe a domestic violence help line, or during this election season I would like to help out the Kerry campaign or the No on 36 campaign.

Good to see someone getting into the volunteer spirit!

Once upon a time I was a member of a local Lions club. It was a very busy four years, but the effort was well worth it. The club did things for the local hospital, disadvantaged children etc. Very rewarding stuff - is there a Lions or similar service club near you? Service clubs are good, because they firstly introduce you to local areas of need, and secondly, you go in with a group to support you. Most of them rarely ask more time/effort of you than you are willing to give.

At the moment my gf and I are heavily into volunteering as emergency medical staff for motorsport (specifically motorcycle racing, although we hope to expand our horizons into car races) events. It's a good outlet for our skills (we're both nurses) and also good experience. Plus the added advantage of hopefully saving a life or two. And, yes, we did, just the weekend before last. We're both mad-keen MC race fans, so we get to see a side of it most fans never dream of. I know it's not doing a lot for the community as a whole, but we already work in public health, so it's a change for us, plus it gives something back to a sport we both love.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Cheers
Jewel
