Infrared photos?

Hi!
What is the best way to start infrared photos? I have understand that there are some lens for this use. My cameras are Nikon D5100 and Nikon D40. Im very intrested to start this, i read few articles for my camera-magzine, but i want to ask advices here. I havent any experience for infrared, so everything is new.

Any lens can be used for IR. However, the focus point for infrared is not the same for visible light. Unfortunately, modern DSLRs have no method to correct for this, and todays' all-digital lenses don't have the IR focus mark lenses used to have (if they have a focus scale at all!).

You need an IR filter on a lens, or have the camera's image sensor converted to IR only.
An IR filter on a lens, will be so dark that the auto focus system cannot work anyway.

Some lenses take 52 mm filters, some take 58, 72, or 77 mm filters. Look at the underside of Nikon lenses for Ø52, or Ø58, etc. The number is the thread size.

If you really want to go all-in, you can have a body surgically converted to a dedicated IR camera.
