I know there is always a lot of talk about "spray and pray" shooting and the ratio of crap pics to keeper pics, so I thought this was interesting and relevant. This was taken from a National Geographic behind the scenes DVD.
Story ranges now are going between 30 and 40 thousand frames [ images shot by the photographers ] per story on average. Thats eventually going to get down to a selection shown to the editor of about 50 pictures. Eventually that will be maybe a dozen photos shown in the magazine.
Now, this does not mean 40,000 crap pictures taken, but it does go to show that not EVERY shot has to be that magical shot. Just food for thought, inspiration, and also as an inside look at one of the most prestigious photography outlets in the world.
