internet boffin help please

can anyone tell me what this message means:

Error 500 - Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
Please try again later.


I keep getting it on a page of one of my websites. Is it a problem with the hosts servers?

when it says 'a problem with Web server software', does that mean my hosts, 1&1 need to fix it? or does it mean the website software/script i have installed?

i'm a bit rubbish at this sort of thing...
