So I was perusing through boxes and putting stuff on eBay.
There this one "coin" if you want to call it that, or more like a Coin Shaped Object which I am selling on eBay.

When I took the initial pictures with my iPhone 5 the coin looked fine. The fake silver looked silver and I could get the halogram effect.

But when I took the pictures with my d7000 with OCF (sb-800 x 2 ) and shoot through umbrellas it came out as if the fake "silver" was tarnished. The flashes were to the side with the bounce being away from the lens.

I'm going to test it more today to understand it but I'm curious if anyone has any quick input ?

Is this an instance where I should shoot from directly above, or place it so that it's directly in front instead of at an angle. I did that with the iphone - directly above.

Looking at these, I don't see a lot of difference, but I'm guessing the surface on which the "coins" were laying was white, and if so, you've got some WB issues, which, when corrected, may resolve your issue.

bust out your magic book, there's this exact scenario in it.

Thanks John, I'll play around with WB. I normally keep it in AUTO
if you look at the lower photos
the lower half of the left coin photo is brownish, the same problem on the top right of the right lower coin.

normally old silver coins can tarnish and may look like this. But this is brilliant all around.

yeah, I was going to flip though that too.
i've taken alot of coin pics in the past and never really had a problem ... but I guess I do now :)

AND it's from a fake Republic of Liberia - US $10 coin
