So Dell's been 'unable to cope with the numbers' of the 2209WA...

Doesn't look like it's returning anytime soon.

Are there any other decent IPS monitors out there, without having to take out all the cash for a NEQ, LaCie or Eizo?

Thanks... didn't realise that Macs were IPS - but they're a bit out of budget and the list has mostly expensive models...

Nope you're snookered. There's a reason why Dell couldn't cope. It was ludicrously underpriced for how good it is.

You'll have to cough up a bit more for an IPS screen. That said the NECs Lacies and Eizos have quite a bit more to offer than just an IPS screen. All the NECs are wide gamut (ok entering colour management hell may not be a bonus), but all those manufacturers offer screens with internal 12bit look-up table. Thus calibration done on the hardware level does not limit the colour depth the screen can display giving simply a perfect image.
