Okay, I'm getting a general consensus here. Yes, from what I've heard he is well known in my town as a band photographer. A lot of bands get him for their shoots and I personally think he's a lot better with performance shoots than portrait shoots.

It's funny because a few of the shots he actually copied from me. But I did at least fix my white balance.

As photographers it's very helpful to look at the work of others so I think this was an effective exercise.

Haven't some of these been posted before? or maybe I'm remembering some other bunch of guys hanging out and a friend took their pictures... That's about all these look like, don't seem too professional by any stretch.

I like ann's suggestion, it might be better to go look for other opportunities.

Yeah I have to agree with the above. I don't think the kit lens what the problem. The problem is that he's just not very good. I much prefer your shots. You are very correct about fixing the WB haha

Neither site demonstrates any flattering portraiture techniques, except in some cases barely the expression. Equipment ain't the problem. It's the lighting and posing. There's a lot to good lighting and posing, starting with quality and direction, that's not optional if you're going for something professional. I would seriously consider retouching bags under the eyes and in some cases skin softening and other portrait treatments.

At f8 these should be sharper even with an 18-55, I would think.

These have the look of a very poor zoom lens...kind of that "looking through aquarium glass" look...like they were made with a really substandard zoom lens. I pulled one into EXIF Reader, and it was shot at f/4.4 at 30mm, and it looked, well, like a crappy lens had been used. It was shot on a Rebel T2i. I've seen this look from a number of substandard zoom lenses.

That makes sense...I used to own a Canon 18-55 kit zoom, the EARLY, non-USM model, the one that the Japanese market buyers would not buy...and it had the same type of "look". The early 18-55 lenses from both Canon and Nikon were made for LOW-rez cameras, 8- and 6-Mp models, respectively...they are not good enough for later, higher-resolution, 18-MP and 24-MP cameras.

HINT: I can't think of any GOOD pro band photographers that use a crop sensor! In low, funky light venues... a full frame is the best way to go. And most of them would have much better glass than was used here! Big frog, small pond, easily impressed small frogs... is what comes to mind.
