The 50 1,8 and 1.4 G uses the exactly same body when I compared the two. Just different cutout for the larger external glass element. So I guess the larger thread.
Oh, I meant why Nikon went with the 58mm thread and the fat barrel on the G-series, instead of the smaller, earlier 50mm f/1.8 AF and AF-D and the 50mm f/1.4 AF and AF-D lenses. Parker's original thread title was about the-50mm-1-8-d-a-macro-lens, so I was talking about why they "ballooned" the G-series models.
I dunno...years ago, Nikon bragged in adverts in magazines how they had good, solid lens choices, from 24mm to 200mm, all in 52mm filter size! (They also had fatter, super-speed lenses too). For me, I prefer the smaller 50mm f/1.8 AF or AF-D lens to my new 50/1.8 G.
Okay, back to Parker219's yellow jacket close-up picture: what is the magnifcation ratio the 50/1.8 AF-S G produces at its minimum focusing distance?
