Is this a good first setup?

Ok so I am thinking of going with the Canon XSi and a 17-85mm lense. This should be good for all around photogrpahy and like nature such as mountains and waterfalls and stuff. Thank you for the output and any help on the best and cheapest websites is welcomed. Thank you.
