My first jump into DSLR was an XTI, and I love it. The lenses are expensive, but the lens that I use most of the time is the canon 50mm prime f1.8 and retails for under $100. This lens is fast, sharp, small, and cheap, so I'm not intimidated by lugging it around for the day to day "stuff". Good luck!
