Is this overkill?

I also have the Manfrotto 190XPROB and love it. I have used it for a few years and have no complaints so far.

The Giottos 9371B is looking pretty good to me, assuming I get that, should I stick with a Giottos head or go with a Manfrotto? I've been reading up on ball heads vs pan heads and from what I've read a ball head will be quicker and more convenient but a pan head will be more stable and they are easier to make fine adjustments on. Is this correct? A pan head sounds good for still life macro but I'm thinking that it would make wildlife macro very difficult since I would have to mess with three knobs rather than just one and they aren't likely to hold still that long.

Depends on what you like.. I use both. My main heavy Tripod has a standard pan head on it... my lighter (8oz's... whoopee! lol!) has a Giottos ballhead on it. I use the ballhead in the field.. bugs, critters, kids.. when I need speed in trying to catch something. The one with the pan head, stays at home. Your call..

The ball head does fine adjustments just fine.. if you can "aim" your camera... a ballhead will let you do it. On the Giottos (and others) there is a tension / friction adjustment as well as the main locking knob. You can set tension as light or heavy as you like.. so you can move the camera fast, or slowly and more precisely. My ball head even has a panning feature on it.. works great.

The vanguard I listed has an articulating center column that does not need to be reversed or to have added adapters. Watch

Funny.. that is the exact same setup I am using! Love it! It is extremely stable, and I don't care what I put on it... it doesn't move!
