Is TPF 'the Internet'?

Luckily i just got off the boat, but some people are still on it trying to find the shore. You are a land dweller who's forgotten how hard it was to get to that point.

90% of what I know I learned by reading manual and articles, watching videos and practicing.

Not everyone is cut out to be a renaissance man. 90% of what i've learned is from this old place and i will gladly return the favour to anyone that requires help.

Let us not be shy here, and let us admit that several people here are thinking of hamlet.

Let us suppose that hamlet IS a troll. What is the worst possible thing you can do? Yes, that's right, post some mean-spirited snarky reply. That is what trolls eat. Consistently providing polite, occasional, correct answers will starve the troll.

Let us suppose hamlet is NOT a troll. Consistently providing polite, occasional, correct answers will eventually educate the poster, and the unending stream of questions will in fact begin to dry up.

There is actually no scenario in which being a jerk gives you what you claim to want. So what DO you want when you get mean and snarky? I know what I want, and it's a fight, to get some bile out, and to hurt someone else.

Trolls are actually pretty rare on the internet (provided we ignore certain spots like Youtube and that Chan place). Sadly since they were "identified" people start to see them everywhere. Anyone who doesn't post or act just like everyone else; or who appears to be a little less bright than others or might approach a subject from a different angle is often mistakenly called a "Troll" when in fact they are just different.

Trolls are rare and honestly if you do think someone is a troll then generally either replying with sensible calm and non hostile replies or just ignoring them utterly defeats them.

I totally understand where Lew and Runnah are coming from but it always comes back to asking myself "Why in the heck can I not simply ignore things?" Sometimes it depends on what side of the bed I woke up on. Most of the time it's because I have issues.

I try to ignore most of the these type threads and focus on critiques but I like everyone else get annoyed by certain behavior. Rather than say nothing I will speak up after a point.

Yup, I get it. And...I am guilty of it even though my self-sensor is much better than it used to be. Every day I want to either go off on something I read on FB or delete people that are really not my friends. Then my sensor kicks in (better than it used to) and I don't click share and I don't delete. It is probably more important for me to know who I really don't want to have a Sam Adams with.

**Oops, sensor = censor ***

I blame it all on my youthful impetuousness! ;)

See I was going to blame it on your ruggedly handsome good looks and your devilish charm. Hmm.. yup, going to have to burn all those romance novels. They really are starting to warp my mind.. lol

I do own quite a few flannel shirts.

Terri,

I don't have distaste for beginners.
What bothers me is when dependent behavior is encouraged.
Yes, the business model here is to scoop in lots of newbies - and depend on the more experienced people to help them along - it's the clicks.
But by not asking the newbies to participate in the process by actually doing something, then what happens is that TPF is providing a model for every other person who comes along to burn up peoples' time and effort.

I looked back at some old threads and the vast proportion of experienced people are gone - and they haven't been replaced.
I come here to help people if I can and to see things that inspire me - and honestly there isn't too much of the latter.

My only interest in this is trying to make this a better place - and I have tried to do my part.

Making an ad hominem attack on me in the thread doesn't encourage me to work harder or to continue posting.

TPF can only burn as much time and effort as someone is willing to put into it.
the minute you feel like you have expended too much energy on any particular subject, you can simply stop participating in it and wait until your energy level has built back up again. say, around power level 9000.

the overall theme of our concern is not that members are being told that there are resources available elsewhere on the vast interwebz...
its the manner in which they are being told. often it very sarcastic and demeaning ways.

Still waiting on the Derrel selfie, thundering by on the back of a mighty stallion, golden locks flowing in the wind behind him.. .rotfl...

I promised myself that I wont participate in Hamlets threads. But, I just don't know for how long will I be able to keep that promise...

I even wanted to post a thread " I want to be Hamlet". Have you seen how many replies he gets every time he asks something?!

But opening this thread in a not so subtle attack on someone does? My interest is to make sure the place stays welcoming and pleasant.

And this...!

We mods are all saying the same thing, Lew! Talk about your repetitive posts...we shouldn't have to resort to this kind of repetition. Especially to threads like these. Your implication here is that newbies who ask repetitive questions have driven off more experienced photographers. There is zero basis for this position, if that is what drives you to tell inexperienced photographers to go learn someplace else before posting questions here. People come - and go - for various reasons, and have done so since the place opened. I answered your question as fully as I can, and you're a smart guy - you already know the answer. We all get your position, but TPF has never been intended for experienced photographers only. Just avoid newbie questions if they continue to annoy you. ;)

A long time ago, I saw an old B&W movie, probably shot in the 1940's, in which the protagonist says, "Shaddddup, kid! Go away! You're bothering me!" to a young boy asking him questions. I tried to find that as a video clip on YouTube today...I thought the actor might have been W.C. Fields, so I did several searches on Google, and was FLOODED with results, but could not find what I was looking for.

I think my inability to find that famous movie clip in the FLOOD of web-search results I got from repeated Google searches, is sort of a good metaphor for this thread. Because, wouldn't life just be swell if everybody we dislike would just go away and leave **us* alone, so *we** could enjoy our lives, unmolested by people we find annoying?
