I think the first one needs some composition adjustments ^-^

I really like the second shot. Nice job on the composition by taking the picture from a different angle than just straight on. I agree that the first one is a niceshot but needs something else which will make it a much better shot.

I can see it was really overcast in these shots, it leaves the pictures with a really dark flat light throughout. The lake scene doesn't really work with this type of light in my opinion while the log and dried bush work better for me. I personally like the third the best. The lighting might not be optimimal but it suits the subject better I think. Compositionally I thought it was the best as well. I would like to see a bit more surroundings and a bit less log smack in your face though. Zoomed out if you will.

Kevin - the sky, I would add a bit more, but I couldn't without furthermore darkening the picture itself.

And yes it was not the best day to take pictures, but I had time to kill and figured I might as well try.
Thank you all for the comments. Much appreciated :)

Yes, see but i don't have photoshop or whatever else.
So, when I say it makes it dark, I really mean it makes it dark.

Does iPhoto not have a Brightness/Contrast tool?

It does, but you can't use it on whatever part of the picture you wanted.
It does the whole photo.

Nice job on # 2. You took two of my least favorite things to see photographed (hearts & flowers) and made it interesting to me.

kevin- i like the clouds on the edit, but the rest is just too dark for me
