What's new

Just getting started! I have a question.

My instructor just emailed me back and said the camera i need for class is one that I should be able to set the aperture, shutter speed, or ISO manually. What is a good choice in your opinion?

You need the cheapest film SLR you can get and/or the cheapest DSLR you can get. Both will be invaluable learning tools. The film ones can be had very cheap and will probably serve the class nicely. If it is a digital class as well i.e. computer editing then the DSLR is needed.

The real issue as I see it is if you buy more on the expensive side then you have effectively bought a system. I recommend the Nikon system. The D50 or D40 can be had relatively inexpensively. Get one with a lens or two. That way you won't mistakenly buy an incompatible lens later. Likewise the FM film camera with a lens. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_FM I bought a Nikon film camera at Goodwill for $20.00. they can be had cheap. The Cheaper Nikon DSLR's can be had for $400ish or less on Craigslist.

Find one for sale and then web search it to verify it has manual control dial settings - particularly the film camera.
