What's new

Just got a D3200, but...

I'm still a bit aggravated over not getting that VR zoom and I still haven't taken anything out of its box. I can get a Nikon D5100 with 18-55 and 55-200 VR zoom lenses for about $70 more than what I paid for the D3200. I'm going to sleep on that tonight and if that offer is still available tomorrow, I may just jump on that.

Well you can't really go wrong either way. The 5100 has a 16 mp sensor as opposed to the 24 mp, but the image quality is really fantastic even at 16 mp, at least I've always been more than satisfied with it.

I called B&H and requested a return authorization on the D3200 kit. It's boxed up and I'm delivering it to UPS shortly.
I also ordered a Nikon D5100 along with Nikon 55-300 DX VR lens from Amazon which cost me $675 (which I don't think is too bad of a price); my budget couldn't handle the Nikon 70-300VR for various reasons. I almost ordered the 55-200 Nikon VR lens but I wanted a little extra reach for taking photos of birds feeding in my back yard. Anyway, I'm glad this is over and I'll be able to concentrate on learning the camera and getting back into the world of DSLR photography. I've used point and shoots long enough and wanted to get into this realm for awhile.
Let the adventure begin, once everything comes in.

I do appreciate the input. It's going to be time to reawaken the old brain cells that used my Pentax K1000 which by the way, my graphic designer daughter still uses. I was drawn to the D5100 because of it's fully articulating screen and features I felt would carry me a little further along in the hobby. $429 for the body and 18-55 VR lens was a really good price and I bit the bullet to get the 55-300 VR lens which was the most I could afford. Birds and deer in the backyard and walking through the woods behind my house will be the primary areas of use with the 55-300 zoom lens. Hummingbirds are also a favorite thing for me to shoot so I'll have to figure out how to do that... I did pretty well photographing hummers using a Canon G12 and Nikon P7700.
I'll download the users manual and start preparing to use the camera.

I think you made the right decision to get the 55-300 and the D5100 is plenty of camera!!! Welcome to the world of the modern d-slr camera!!!
