You ARE on the right track, I should say! My favourite of the lot you have so far posted (which I hope won't be the last of your photos that we shall get to see!!! ) is the one of the railway bridge... the first in the SECOND set of photos you posted. I like the way the lines goes through that photo.
The third one (second of second lot) is interesting in its framing and DOF but just does not appeal to me as much --- but that is a personal thing.

The flower photo could do with some cropping; I think I would at least TRY to get the background petals out of the picture. I just THINK there is room enough to do so just by cropping...
