What's new

Just starting out comments and suggestions please

I started a thread like this before and got smart a** remarks. I think the best advice I got was don't forget to charge the battery. I can say I do like burdock87 advice also sure my comment was not a lie look around on here at other posts I have seen it before.

Oh believe in yourself and always have confidence in what you are doing

About this forum, the best advice I can offer is to be open to honest opinions. They may sound harsh, but they truly will help you if you are open and responsive. If you want feedback, you'll get feed back. Sometimes, it will be sugar coated, but more often than not, they give it to you how it is.

About photography, I'd say read, read and read some more. No matter your skill level, there is always room to learn more. If you truly care about your artform, you will want to know all that you can about it. I think 99.9% of the people on here will openly admit that they don't know everything there is to know.

I'm going to go ahead and wipe a little brown on my nose here. If Bitter Jeweler, tirediron, Ron Evers, etc. have some criticisms about anything you post, they mean to assist your growth as a photographer. Most of us here do. Some may be a little blunt, but we all mean well, for the most part. The only advice I have is to keep pressing that shutter, analyze your photo, let us view it and help, use other forums as well. Practice, practice, practice. 33,000+ actuations of my shutter since August 2010 and I still get a shot worth keeping (IMHO) every hundred or so.

Don't take what people on here say to heart. Sometimes it can be a very tough crowd.

I agree and disagree with 8ball. I agree that sometimes you may want to disregard what some people say as it may seem to be a little harsh and un-helpful (ex. "that sucks, do better", "what were you thinking?", etc.) however other times people have valid points (ex. "quit centering your subject", "it feels like I'm falling to the side looking at your photo", etc.) and those, IMHO, should be taken to heart as they will most likely help you in the long run.

The disadvantage to words on a page vs face to face conversation is lack of visual cues, i.e., facial expression, body language, as well as a lack of auditory cues, like tone of voice. Sometimes a reply seems rude, mean, whatever, when in fact, the person writing it is simply being short, concise, and to the point. Without those cues, it's easy to see how people new to the wonderful world of internet forums can feel they're being handled roughly. You're not. Yes, there is snark a plenty, smart assed answers and some occasional rudeness, but this is far from the majority of the time. I write long wordy replies more than most here, because I don't mind doing it. Many people here just don't want to do that, so they're more economical with there words. Nothing wrong with that either. Some people use sarcasm to get you thinking so you can answer your own question and therefore get more out of it. Lately it seems like every new user on this forum feels they're being mistreated. You're not. If you have a thin skin and you're easily offended or emotionally wounded, get off the internet, it's no place you should be. I've never been a member of any forum that was all sweetness and light, especially when dealing with anything art or hobby related, where brand loyalties and opinions/philosophies are deep seated. So next time you think somebody is being rude to you, give them the benefit of the doubt. Chances are they're only being brief and honest. And isn't honesty what you came here for?
