You need to be intimately familiar with your cameras controls, features, and functions to use it effectively, so read your camera user's manual - several times - and keep it handy for quick reference.

My advise; if online tutorials aren't your thing, try buying a magazine specifically about this subject; for some reason that can work much better than clicking around on the internet

LOL! Take a ton of photos, even if they're of the same thing. You might not get the shot you want in your first attempt.
