Even my untrained eye says it's blurry.

It seems you used a very wide aperture and focused on the far left of the star, which kind of makes the rest of the star behind it progressively blurry. Is that a mirror behind it, or another ornament? What settings were you using?

It should tell you in the manual. Most cameras allow you to cancel the flash in auto modes.

Try to get out of auto please!! Put it into aperture priority for the best out of the lens. You can shoot wide open just set it to f/1.8 and forget it! You are correct it does seem to be out of focus. You might be too close. GL

yup... seems like you were too close for the lens to focus.

did you read the manual yet? 'cause if you did then it should tell you how to cancel the flash... always read the manual first if you don't know how to use a device!

Just sayin...

You picked up a pretty nice camera, especially for a rookie, then vice mastering your kit equipment, you decided you would throw more twists in and pick up an additional lens to also try and learn.
If you have the cash, you cant really go wrong in the end I guess.


As for your photo, I see nothing in focus and your composition is off in my opinion.

In creative Auto mode you have the option to turn off the flash, in full auto you don't.

In auto, you can't turn it off. It just goes off whenever it thinks it needs to.

Try to get away from auto...

Give Av a try... You pick the aperture, the camera will pick everything else to give you a good exposure. The flash won't fire unless you tell it to.
