You do know that you will not have auto focus with that lens ?

As far as I know, if it's AF-S then it should have an internal autofocus motor.

I thought that was how it works. I have just got a d5100 and have been looking at af-s lenses. Is there a cheat sheet anyone knows of to show what will and not work?

Go to the Nikon web site.
Find your model of camera.
Click on the specifications tab.
Scroll down to "lens compatibility".

All the information you seek is there, just a few short clicks away, even quicker than posting the question.

The manufacturers' websites for almost any product are often the first and best source of information.

AF-I/AF-S lenses should work. :D

I thought the F1.8 did not focus have they made a new one ?

  • Autofocus is available with AF-S and AF-I lenses
  • Autofocus is not available with other type G and D lenses, AF lenses (IX-NIKKOR and lenses for the F3AF are not supported) and AI-P lenses
  • Non-CPU lenses can be used in mode M but the camera exposure meter will not function
  • Note: The electronic rangefinder can be used with lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster

Why guess, the answer took five clicks starting from desktop.

Yeah, they just came out with a new AF-S 50mm f1.8G. You are thinking of the 50mm f1.8D. The new 50mm f1.8G is stellar and is actually sharper than the 50mm f1.4G when comparing both wide open or even comparing the 1.4G stopped down to f1.8 and the f1.8G wide open. It's a stellar lens for $200 (just like the D was for $100ish).

I have a 50mm AF f/1.8D that won't auto-focus on his baby Nikon. My 35-70mm AF f2.8D also won't auto-focus on his camera. :D Also, I believe all AF-S lenses D designated. I have seen D rated AF Nikon lenses called AF-D too.

Nikon's Website said it will work since it's AF-S I'm excited to get some shots with it!

I have an older version of that lens and I love it. The sharpness is amazing for the price that I paid for, $120.

I only found it for $219 and it's going to be my first prime lens! I'm taking it to Aruba on vacation with me. Hoping to capture some good photos of the beautiful island

That internal focus motor is not cheap! :D
