I was playing around with my p&s last night after taking some pictures of my new bike build. Anyways, l was using my palm as a reflector for the flash, let me know what you think on the lighting (and how it can improve).

Use some tissue or paper to diffuse the light a little more.
The lighting is bringing out the scratches.

Other than that it is a good shot for a P&S.

I'll have to try that dxqcanada, thanks! My girlfriend pointed out the scratches in the picture and went on about a new ring etc etc, so that was a mistake!

I think that to get a close-up as sharp as this one (even showing the scratches!) with a compact camera is quite something! The light is a BIT on the contrasty side, but not too bad, I think. The tissue might smoothen it some, but I like this pic as is! Even with the scratches! What ring that is worn on all occasions does NOT get scratches?

The contrast is partially my fault, I may have turned the contrast up just a bit, the right side was a little blown out and I definitely just edited it in iPhoto.
