We're planning to set up a small studio in a portacabin for photographing clothing on mannoquins, but we think we'll have a real problem with overhead lighting as it is just a normal size room. Is there any way around this? Is there such a thing as a slimline ceiling mounted light that takes a fluorescent daylight bulb, and if so where can I get one? Thanks in advance for your help.:meh:

Most florescent bulbs are the tube type/shape...so they don't really take up a lot of space. That may not be idea for lighting control, but it can give you a fairly even overhead light...which is why you see them in just about every office/school/building etc.

Another question might be...do you really need a light right above the mannequins?

I would reccomend industrial strip lighting, just like mike mentioned, they have them in schools and at workplaces.
Another option is to infact work with minimal lighting and get some studio strobes to really control the lighting.

Thanks for your comments guys, much appreciated. As I said we'll be working in a portacabin and conveniently it already has fluorescent strip lights already fitted, so do you reckon all I need to do is get 'daylight' tubes for it? That would be great.

We're extreme novices at this and decided to dive straight in and try to learn as we go along. Do you think that bouncing the light off the ceiling would be equally effective for lighting the products on the mannequins?

Thanks again.
