I am going to Mesa, AZ for the 1st time and will have time for a day of shooting. Would appreciate any suggestions on good locations in and around Mesa?
Thanks,
George

Man, I think you might be in for a shock. Mesa/Phoenix is hot, flat, and brown. To the northwest is Wickenburg, and to the north is Sedona which is spectacular. A couple spots I know of that are interesting in Phoenix are a restaraunt called 'Lon's' and also there is a golf course (don't know the name) that has a clubhouse designed by Frank Loyd Wright. Google for both.

I miss living in Mesa/Gilbert

I have been looking at the suggestions and a co-worker had also stated that Sedona was a "hippie" spiritual type area that is breath taking. As I do not have a car I will need to rent one in Mesa/Gilbert for the day. Want to catch sunrise for sure and hopefully stay while the sun begins to set.

Just read that Allegiant does not allow more than 2 alkaline batt on board. I have my flash with double A's and a spare 20 pack. My carry on is my Crumpler w/D800, 20x70, 70x200 and a Fisheye (to use in DX crop mode) and my Flash. I hate flying because of all the hassle....

Airport said the battery thing is not an issue

Yeah, Sedona will blow your mind. And yes, it's very hippie dippie New Age, lots of crystals and pyramids. Nevertheless you ain't seen nothing like it...

If you rent a car and Sedona creeps you out, Jerome is nearby though it is becoming 'trendy'.

There is also Prescott, and along a small back road, Skull Valley with it's cemetery with many Civil War graves.
