Laptops suck...

Apple makes some beautiful hardware. Too bad they restrict you into doing everything their way.

My thoughts as well. And you pay a huge $premium$ for having to do it their way! Although, I gotta admit, they are pretty and slicker than snot!!

HORSE APPLES!!!! If you compare Apples to Apples instead of Apples to dried prunes you would find that Macs are not more expensive.
Difference is every Tom, Dick and Dildo builds hardware that is supposed to be Microsoft compatible. Some good, most average and a good portion just plain JUNK. Microsoft builds their OS to work with every Tom, Dick and Dildo hardware. The massive amounts of potential conflicts are well know and documented.

I haven't paid for a new operating system since Snow Leopard and the jump from Leopard to Snow Leopard was a staggeringly huge premium of $9.99. What a killer. How many operating systems have you paid for from Microsoft since XP?

Mac for those that want to sit down, do their work and get on with their life.
Microsoft if you want to tinker, fix, replace, build, and tinker some more.

On a final note, a lot of what you see as slick is actually very practical. An aluminum case with micro ventilation may look good, but it also makes one huge heat sink to keep the thing cool with less effort and less power.

I disagree with you Gryphon...Apple is way more expensive when comparing the 'guts' of a machine. I compared the MacBook Air to the Asus, and there was no comparison. The Asus smoked the MacBook and I was really ready to jump ship. I just couldn't justify paying for a 256 hd machine (even if it is flash drive memory) vs. a 1 TB hard drive for about the same price. The 2gb video card on the Asus clinched the deal. i7 chip too!

Thanks for proving my point. Like I said Apples to Apples not apples to something else like you did. This may come as a surprise to some in the Windows world, but hardware is hardware. If you price the hardware in a Mac and price the exact same hardware to put in a Windows machine it's the same price. Apple un-apologetically puts only top quality hardware in their machines. They back it was top quality service and an OS that is buily for the hardware.

Call me in a few years. I am writing this on a early 2009 MBP. It still performs and performs very well. Keeps up with everything I do including PS6 and LR5. Every Windows machine I ever owned was in need of replacement within 3 years. Why, Not the hardware, the OS.

My wife just got a new MBP. It replaces her 2007 MPB. Not because it quite or was too slow, but she wanted to have the advantages of the newer hardware developments that came out since 2007, like a full function touchpad instead of the older touch two button touch pad. I cleaned it, reloaded Maverick onto it and the programs we wanted for the new task it is to fill and it now sits at the kitchen desk. Great for checking and buying things from the internet, cooking and paying bills.

To each his own, it doesn't matter to me what others use. We are more than getting our moneys worth from our Mac's.

I've never paid more than about $25 for a new OS, since by the time I need to upgrade the OS I also need to upgrade my computer so I just buy a custom built PC and have builders install the OS.

That's just for laptops though.

I also play video games and 2-3 years in gaming hardware is a big deal.

Ok, couple of quick thoughts on laptops here - the power plug is the most common point of failure because it gets stressed the most, with folks constantly plugging in the power connection, unplugging it.. generally it holds up pretty well all things considered. What usually causes the most problems is when people grab the cord rather than the plug and pull the plug out that way, puts a lot of stress on the power connector itself.

Some of the newer designs actually have a power plug that rides in a rubber plug and connects via a cord to the motherboard, this is a far better design than a lot of the previous laptops where the power connector is soldered directly to the motherboard. Once one of those go you had might as well replace the entire motherboard, and in a lot of laptops unless you can do the work yourself you might as well buy a new laptop for what it costs you to swap the motherboard.

I am not sure about the USA, but when I was last buying a laptop in UK , it was 3,5 years ago, I bought a 17in lenovo with then top specs for 899 pounds. Anything from Mac with similar specs was 1599 British pounds and more. That is almost TWICE as much. And that was 15 in. Sinse Apple does not produce 17 in laptops amy more.

Well I have a macbook mid 2012 and not to sound like a mac snob because I been using windows for over a decade and we also have 4 other laptops from windows 7 to windows 8 but none of the windows holds the build quality of my mac,none of our windows laptops can even compete in battery life per charge.They all run a lot warmer to even hot and none of them is easy to access any hardware parts.Also non of the windows laptops holds a candle to resale value.A $1500.00 windows Laptop resale value in a year or two vs the resale value of a macbook will not be of the same value.Mac resale or trade in a year you lose a shirt.Windows resale or trade in a year,you lose your shirt,paints and socks.Your lucky to leave with your undies on.

That being said,buy what you can afford and it's obvious microshaft windozers have low cost to high cost machines to accommodate a wider variety of people more so then apple does.

So you paid for the OS with the computer.

Well I mean, you have the option of getting the computer without the OS. Usually you can choose to have it installed for a super cheap price. But companies who do that probably get OS's in bulk and for a high discount. My dad used to work for schools installing their computer systems and he'd always end up with like 50 extra copies of Windows 98 and XP that were "not for resale" lol

And so the holy war waged on - one side would build a temple, someone else would burn it to the ground. Wars would be fought over the rubble. Then someone else would come along and build another temple, only to have it destroyed a few years later, ad infinitum. I guess it never occurred to either side to just build a temple someplace else.

It didn't matter of course, there would be no converts on either side. The one side would never give up the rapture of the retinal display, while the other had decided that true salvation lie in the ability to customize their hardware to their exact needs.

And thus the war raged on, well.. at least until the zombies took over. But that, my friends, is another story..
