I will stop in at the police station today and ask.

Few at the police station will know what the law is.
Policeman only have familiarity with the narrow range of laws they deal with on a daily basis, and even then they often get it wrong with those laws they think they know.

Every run in with the law I have had has been great. I still got tickets and or arrested but by being compliment and respectful I either got a reduced fine or got a warning.

Right or wrong you won't win an argument with a cop in a field or on the side of the road.

I've had varying experiences, but being courteous goes a LONG way. Some police officers are just not pleasant people, but if you need to go to court, being courteous from the get go never hurts.

Please notice the OP is in CANADA! Laws in other countries will not apply.

Oy... Didn't notice that. I think it would be "mostly the same", but don't take my word for it...

It is EXACTLY the same in Canada.
