concerned about distortion that I may not be aware of while shooting, wondering which lens is best (other than trial and error I need to go through).

I have a sigma 18-250 F3.5-6.3 which I think gives me very nice sharp shots, but obvious distortion at the low end, aperture isn't an issue as I have plenty of light.

also still have the 18-55 kit lens that came with the Canon XS (I don't ever use it as I leave the Sigma on full time for convenience).

wondering if a fixed lens like a 50 f/1.8 (about $99) would make a better studio/modeling lens?

thoughts?

Prime lenses have inherently better IQ than their zoom-able counterparts. For portrait work with an APS-C size sensor I would look for something in the 50-60mm for upper/whole body shots and in the 85-100mm range for head/bust shots. If the budget will allow it, look at the 50mm 1.4; that reduced DoF (and increased sharpness at larger apertures) will definitely pay off.

Well judging by the studio space that you have (from your previous thread), I'd recommend the Canon 35mm f/2. The 50mm will probably be too restrictive in that environment on a crop frame body. Sigma also has a 30mm f/1.4 which would be nice.

in a 24 X 16 studio, the 50mm on a crop sensor is kinda hard to work with for full lengh shots.

Missed the dimensions - agree, the shorter lenses might work better in these more restrictive environments.

Good points all - thanks!

So the 30 won't give me distortion?

A 50mm would be ok if you're looking for upper torso portraits or closer but you'd have to be pretty creative for full body shots. A 30 or 35 mm range would be a better bet imo.
