Lens Help for Canon 40D

Total noob wondering what lens to go with for all around use. 75% of the time I am taking pictures indoors of my kids.

I also want to use it to take product pictures (not professional or anything).

Here is what I am looking at:

go with just the body and for like 80 bucks or close to that on amazon get the 50mm f/1.8....aka nifty fifty....i love this lens...and then pretty much anything with an l after it haha but then ur talking about big bucks

Go with the first option, the EF-S 17-85mm.

I think that only having 28mm as your widest/shortest focal length, would be really limiting, especially indoors where you may not have room to back up.
