I don't think you would be disappointed by the Tamron. I still use mine and I still really love it for macro and I have no qualms about shooting portraits or weddings with it.
If you can get the Nikon VR I that's the way I'd go too, but if it's just not an option? The tamron is an awesome value for the $.
