Hello to all,
So I've got for my birthday the canon 1000D, I got with it the 18-55mm lenses but not the IS :meh:
And now I am wondering which lenses to buy.
I thought maybe the canon EF-S 55-250mm IS and the canon 50mm 1.8?
What do you think? Mainly I photograph landscape and animals and I'd like to photograph some shots at the night.

if you mainly do night landscapes, i would invest in a 50 1.4

the range on the 55-250 is nice for animals, but you might find the aperture a bit small if you plan to shoot them at night as well

In general, if you are not sure what lens(es) to get, it is better not to get it and just stay with the kit lens until you know enough to figure it out yourself.

For example, you like to get into sports and would like to get a pair of shoes. Should you buy a pair of running shoes? or tennis shoes? How about basketball shoes? They all cost from $20 to $200. Of course, you can wear a pair of running shoes to play tennis, it may not be the best, but it will work.

Of course, if you really really want to get more lens now, the 2 lenses you mentioned are not too bad for starter.

Dao has given you the best advice, and it's often repeated here. Learn to use your camera with what you have first. The more you shoot, the more you'll figure out what you need. But again, the most important thing right now is to learn how your camera, and photography, work. Once you have a good understanding of your camera and the mechanics of photography, you will have taken more than enough pictures to know what type(s) of lens(es) you need. At that point, it becomes a matter of your budget.

If you have some money to spend right now, you could upgrade your kit lens to the IS version, it really is better optically than the non IS and runs about $170USD new, or you can pick one up on e-bay for under $100US.

What kind of shots do you want to do at night? The lens and uses really vary upon usage at night.

Dao, you are like the zen master of analogies.

Thanks for all of the replies!
About the night shots- I am not going to do those as much as the lanscape ones and the animals, just sometimes, more city at night.
Anyway I will go on like was aid before and learn more about my camera and see what I need mostly.
Thanks again!

Learning the camera would be the 1st thing you should master prior to investing into lens but that's just me.
I would strongly suggest a flash for shots where the light is not in your favor and a tripod along with a remote shutter.
Also when it comes to lens, you should already know what you're lacking in terms of focal length and your questions should really be about quality or other similar options which some members can help you with.

A 50mm 1.8 lens is nice for low light conditions, however it will always give you issues if you're trying to shoot indoors since a 50mm lens will act as a telephoto lens on a crop body. For a cheapie lens, this is a great purchase and not to mention there is a pretty large market if you decide to sell.

For shooting animals you will always shoot telephoto so the 55-250 is definitely a great starting point; for small bird photography you might find that a 250mm might not give you the most desired reach.
