Lately I've had the opportunity to use some Profoto lighting and modifiers in a rental studio. In most cases I shoot primarily with available and natural light, but lately I'm starting to develop a love for studio portraiture as well. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a nice strobe, with either a beauty dish or octa.

Speaking of single strobes, I shot this yesterday using a single Profoto head with a beauty dish attached, without a diffusing sock. The output on the light was set to 6 if I remember correctly.
Shot on a Canon 5D Classic with a Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens attached set to f/3.2, 1/160th sec, ISO 100.

I like the simple yet dramatic light, and the direct, 'no nonsense' pose with the tight crop.

Seems to suit the subject too.

Have you considered constant LED lights? I've been trying low cost ones, but I've read that more professionals are going that route? Flash seems rooted in the age of film, whereas LED seems more suited to digital.

Thank you!

I haven't considered LED, but I'm not against the idea. I'm curious to know how effective they would be with larger modifiers.

Not at all. Constant LEDs have their uses, but the simple fact is even the best LEDs simply don't have the output to accommodate a lot of situations.

This is what I had assumed, but honestly I know very little about both flash and LED.

If you always do the same thing, you can make a specialist set-up work (eg Peter Hurley & Kino-flo), but if you need versatility...

great profile shot. ever try to get a touch more eye to come out and play?

Thank you.

I did do some work on his eyes in order to bring more detail out, but tried being very careful not to overdo it in order to avoid making his eyes look too obviously edited.
