Light meter help!

So i just bought a Canon EOS Rebel 300D, and for some reason for whatever photo i try to take it only tells me that ¨5 or super small is needed. any higher shutter speed is way off according to the camera. Is there a cheap way to fix this or something on the camera I have to fix?

Can you tell us more?

What lighting conditions are you shooting in? What are you aiming the camera at when it gives you those readings? Do you have the lens cap on? What mode are you in? Do you have EC (exposure compensation) set to something other than zero?
