Finally found a cheap $10 flashlight that allowed me to try my hand at light painting.

#3's great I think. To really get great at this you'll need a wireless remote for long bulb exposures and outside locations. My favorite light paintings show a good balance of ambient light and painted light. Good luck!

Dak and Rez basically summed it up.

Tripod.
Long Exposure.
Wireless Remote Helps.
Cheap colored flashlight.
