Anyone else ever experiment with light painting? I tried my hand at it this weekend and had a blast. Today I'm going to head to the store to get some smaller lights so I can work with more detail but here's what I came up with last night.

Hey, that's pretty cool that you're interested in light painting. That's something I had the honest intention of really getting into.. one of the reasons I wanted a DSLR so badly (longer exposures) but I never really followed through much.

I like your boat/clouds one the most... #3. It also looks pretty much in focus. I think the best method is to figure out what you want to create, set up the camera and take an exposure with no light painting first.. just to get the focus and the ambient set right. Then run over and do your painting during a second exposure. The best thing to have here would be a remote or a shutter release cable so you could do bulb exposures... maybe time it with a watch or have a friend keep track of the time.

Here's a link to my favorite light painter:
Michael Bosanko. Photographer - Light Artist

And here's a video which originally got me interested in light painting in the first place.

Hope to see more of this... I promise I'll try and make one in the next few days. Where in the Midwest are you btw?

I usually don't care much for these shots but these are pretty cool. I like #1 the best. Good job!

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Reznap, I'm in the St. Louis area. And thanks for the video and links, it gave me more ideas that I'll hopefully get to play with tonight. I'm hoping for Christmas that I can get a remote to make this easier. For now I'm just using the self timer. Also, you had a great idea about getting things in focus. I'll try that tonight.

I really thought the first one was pretty neat. These are cool, good luck with trying some new ideas!

This question can probably be answered via google, but I'll ask here for the hell of it. How do you get the "light painting" without the painter in the image as well?

Because the shutter speed is so slow it's catching the light in the frame. The painter, myself, is moving so fast in the frame that I generally do not appear in the picture.
