First of all, this is a really nice series of video portraits of inventors.

In this particular one, some of the photos are shot with back light, but the people are well lit. The lighting don't look natural but there's something about it that I really dig. Do you think the photographer has a elaborate set or do you think he is just relying on a flash on his camera?

Hard to say which photo you're talking about, but without fail, the photos in both videos are multiple light setups.
 
Read the shadows to discover where the lights are.

The photo at 1:25 in the top video is backlit by the sun, notice the dark hard shadows between the camera and the subjects. Their faces were that shadowed too.

Looking at the shadow of the womans nose indicates there was a strobe light camera left that had a small relector on it, or that was bare. The shadow of her nose doesn't fall below her nose, indicating the light was about at her eye level, not up high..
