LIGHTROOM: How to save all the pics from Develop mode

No, they are still there... you just need to open up that catalog.

I did! And nothing is happening. Everything is gone. I see "0" next to everything. Previous imports, past collections EVERYTHING has a "0" next to it for "0" pictures!!

I dont think you understand how catalog works. Read my previous post and start over!

Dont worry, you still have them. START OVER!

1. Create a new catalog
2. Import MyDocument/MyPictures/.... (assuming this is where all the RAWs are)
3. Import whatever other folders where you donwload your RAWs

This will add a new catalog with all the pictures in that folder. If you had ajusted it before, it will show them! Good luck!

PS. This will take really really long depending how many photos you have.

I did this and it and the adjustments are not showing. EVERYTHING is loading as the original .raw files. NONE of my hundreds of edits are showing. I'm so upset!!!!!

Why is this happening? Is it because I saved my previous import as a new catalog????? Everything is wiped out!!

OMG thank god! I reopened the original catalog, not the one I just created and found everything! Thanks for your help! I just don't really understand these catalogs and collections. I know how to edit in lightroom, but all i do is import, develop and edit... then export as jpgs. I don't know much else.

So basically I only need 1 catalog, and save the imports and edits that I want grouped or labeled to a collection?

Yes.. sorry for the misinformation. All your adjustment is saved on that .lrcat file (LR catalog). Im just not following what you are trying to do. Your photos should be put in the library by dates. So they are pretty organized. You should start putting stars/rating on your favorite photos. That way you can show photos that you LIKE only on that particular folder.

Gahhh... I have to figure out how to organize and label these folders because im not seeing what you are seeing. Thanks for the info on the ratings.. im gonna do that too.

How are your photos organized? How do you upload the pics?

Let's say you have shot photos in the last 7 days on ONE card, tell me step by step what you do.

Well I pop the SD card in the computer and LR automatically pops up and wants to import. So I hit import and while (or after) LR is importing, I also drag and drop the raw files from the card onto a folder in my computer.
So after that I just go into develop mode and start playing around and editing. When im satisfied i just export as jpegs creating a new folder for each session. Thats pretty much what I do. What do you do?

If you do that, it wont show on LR3.
Also when you import, did you set it to automatically put it on different folders (by date)?

I had no idea it can do that. How do I play around with those settings?

just play around with the setting before you hit IMPORT

All of this could have been averted if you had RTFM.

Lightroom 3 doesn't actually alter your original RAW files so they are always available to you. You don't need to re-import your images to start a new edit. That's just taking up more room on your computer.

Instead, next time you edit an image, in the library's grid view right click on the image you want to make a new edit on and click "Make a Virtual Copy." Lightroom will show 2 copies of your image in the grid and each can be edited seperately. Two advantages to doing this. First, your saving a bunch of hard drive room, and second you can now compare both edits side by side. It also mean you only have one catalog and the edits from a single image stay side by side so you can find them easier.

I'd also recomend Scott Kelby's Lightroom 3 book. Its a valuable rescource.

Lightroom's main function is database management, not image editing.

Unfortunately people by it for it's secondary function - image editing, and totally ignore learning how it's main function, database management works.

Anyone that has Lighteroom can benefit greatly from 2 books:
  1. The DAM Book, Digital Asset Management for Photographers by Peter Krogh
  2. Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS5 by Jeff Schewe and Bruce Frazer.
Lightroom 3's image editing function is Adobe Camera Raw 6 which is included with Photoshop CS5. So getting the Camera Raw book explains how to use Lightroom 3's editing functions too.
