Here is my first attempt at streaking stars. I did three 3 minute exposures and stacked them in PS.
I was worried about over heatings the sensor, although I think I could have left it longer as it was -20 celsius. If anyone can shed some light on this that would be great.

It has great potential, but you needed at least five times more exposures. You could try doing 30 sec exposures, doing 30 minute worth and then stacking them. The trails are way too short, but it is a nce scene and will definitely work.

My opinion though is that I like the composition and I like the colors.
Also it looks to me like some of the stacking didn't work right or something because some of the stars closer to the middle don't seem to connect.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I won't be able to catch this same scene for a while, it's a 10 hour drive from home, but I'm sure I can find something here that could work as well.
Do you know if keeping the shutter open longer affects the sensor in colder temperatures?

Thanks, I noticed that as well and couldn't get it to line up better. I'll have try with other situations and see what happens.

I've kept a 645D open for over half an hour in -6 degrees:

I was attempting a star trail and hoping for it to be reflected. I misjudged my timing and the moon came over the hill behind me... This was 43 mins. The main issue you will have is with battery life in low temperatures. I used an external battery. I also managed to kick the tripod which means it's blurred. So my advice is: don't be a klutz like me! I was by a seat and moved my foot when sitting too close to the tripod

I actually disagree there are no star trails that can be "to short" its just all about what you like and the effect your going for.
In terms of overheating the sensor, i've never heard of that. I've left my shutter open for over an hour in 10 degree weather and not had a problem. (though the stacking of 30 second exposures also works very well!

That is good to know. I found it to be a lot of fun trying it. I only have one battery so I guess I can just shoot until its dead lol.
I liked the 3 minute exposure for the colour of the sky.
Yours looks like it was shot in the day.

I actually liked the star trail in this one even though it wasn't all the way around. I found it to be interesting as it really adds life to your shot.

quick question, if you were to do a longer exposure on bulb, Where would you recomend the ISO to be, in order to avoid under/over exposed images?

I would recommend a lower ISO reduce noise. I used ISO 100 as your camera is on a tripod, at least if you want sharp photos, and you have to pay around a little to get the exposure you're looking for. Also, a higher ISO will brighten the image so if you want to use shorter exposures then that would be the way to go.
