Could I ask for your CC on this lighting and processing. I used speed light flash off to the center-left , Speed light flash On Top facing down, a silver reflector below to the right, Soft over head ambient light.

I have 4 children and my youngest son is the one who is more willing to help me out. So you see a lot of him from me. I know I have to work on poses but right now trying to really understand lighting and where to position them along with a certain processing I have been working on.

I think you could raise the key light up a little, and the hair light is very good, but I'm not seeing any effect from the silver reflector right nor the soft ambient light from above.

Devices used between the flash tube and the subject to modify (usually soften) the light such as umbrellas, soft-boxes, beauty dishes, etc. While you can do some very good work shooting "bare tube" (a strobed light used witout a modifier), it is generally easier to produce nicer results if you diffuse the flash in some way. Even something as simple as a clear Tupperware-style container slipped over the flash, or a single ply of white toilet-tissue can help greatly.

Think of the difference in light between a clear, sunny day, and an overcast one. On a sunny day, with direct sun, there is lots of contrast, harsh/strong shadows, and you have face a certain way to get a good shot. On an overcast day, the clouds act as a diffuser making the light, and thus the shadows, softer and often more attractive.

Oh yeah ok now I know what you mean. I only used that plastic thing that pulls out on the flash for the front center light. I don't have any soft boxes or umbrellas just yet.

What you said about the the clouds on an over cast day is a great way to explain , It makes a lot of sense.
