    I would bet he swallowed the whole thing and could likely have swallowed one half again as big as this one. They have no teeth to chew or tear apart their prey, so swallowing whole is the name of the game. Like Zombie's observation and my own, they can suck down stuff that you'd make book on them not getting past their beak.

    Especially a little thing like this grebe.

    I am pretty sure he did. After I took this shot his body turned so all I got was his backside and couldn't see much but it looked like he was a least trying to swallow it.
