Long Lens

I am new I have a Nikon 5100 with a 18-55 mm and a 55-200 mm lens. In order to photograph wildlife I want to get a longer lens. Suggestions?

You need to invest in a lens stretcher.

In addition to your budget, it would be nice to know:

1. prime or zoom?
2. any aperture restrictions?
3. does AF need to be fast? Need, not want.
4. do you want to stay with Nikkors or will a 3rd-party lens be acceptable?
5. will the use of filters be common?
6. is size & weight a major factor?

Yep, I think with top of the line lens stretcher you can squeeze up to 500mm from the 55-200nn lens

55-300mm or 70-300mm will do the trick if you are on a limited budget.
There is also 150-500mm Sigma and I believe even 150-600mm by Tamron but those will be obviously more expensive.

Tamron 150-600mm f/5~6.3 is a popular choice for a truly LONG zoom lens. Sigma has two 150-600mm models, both new, like the Tamron, and the lighter SIgma version, the "Contemporary" model is priced almost the same as the Tamron 150-600, and is priced very close as well. The Sigma Sport model weighs about two pounds more than the other two lenses, and costs another nine hundred dollars or so, but seems from what I have seen on-line, to be the best of the three lenses--buuuuuut, it's in the 6-pound lens class, which makes for a very front-heavy balance on a small,light camera like a D5100.
