I know it's not the best bird photo in the world; the robin is back-lit and obscured by a tree branch and the focus is a bit soft, but I was examining a dead walnut tree to see if it had termites when I was surprised by this guy fluttering just a few feet from me. I thought they had all gone south by now. I had my 55mm with me so I was able to sneak in a little closer and get this shot before it was startled by my proximity and flew off. It's not perfect, but it was a nice moment captured.

It really *is* a nice moment captured. The bird's positioning within the small area of light is really good. The framing, with the limbs in the foreground, and the single leaf overlapping the bird's body ADD a lot of dimension, a lot of feeling of actual depth. Yeah, the technicals are a bit off, but is *is* a nice moment, captured. Not just remembered, but captured as well.

Thanks! I had to manually focus because the camera wanted to focus on everything but the robin, and it looks like I was just a hair off, but it looks alright as long as you don't enlarge it too much!

Yeah...we all have shots like that...I bet it looks freakin' AWESOME on a smart phone screen, or on a camera LCD screen. There are some advantages to seeing images small! It is a really nice bird picture--it's got a lot of nice "environment" showing....not just a bird, but "a bird in a specific kind of place".

I like it, the soft focus doesn't really bug me as the rest of the shot has some nice elements and depth to it.
