Similar to the Vivitar 285 but with a bounce AND swivel head. Basically this: relatively cheap, manual power control, and a bounce and swivel head. Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

I would stick to Nikon branded flashes; SB-600 or SB-800. This will give you full compatibility with the iTTL in Nikon's DSLRs as well as Manual control. It will cost more than your Vivitar flash though.

Ditto.

I went with Nikon-brand speedlights (SB800's and 900's) and have been 100% satisfied. More than that, I've been blown away. (seeing that 'oversatisfied' is not a word).

In your situation, a SB600 now... and then a SB800 if you really got serious about it later would be a great addtion. Off-camera flash is immediately available with the SBXxx purchase.
