How about a VW Tiguan? Easily find one in your price range CPO, also has 4-motion. Don't let VW reliability scare you away either, they have come a long way and their 5cyl motors are serious work horses and had made it in the top list of least serviced engines.

You would also get VW's 3 year no cost mainatnence, free oil changes, tire rotation, brake fluid flush for the first 3 years.

I have considered a Jetta Sportwagon TDI for the mileage. But I haven't heard great things about the Tiguan.

Those are also nice! My cousin owned a golf TDI that he sold at 320,000 miles and now drives a Jetta TDI with 200k something miles on the clock. They get great mileage too.

Late to the party.. but i helped a friend test drive a 2013 Ford Escape SEL (~20k miles) and was very impressed.

IMHO its better looking then the Toyota/Honda competitors. The white stitching on the leather gave the interior a very 'euro' feel.. lots of room, good power, good gas mileage and nice ride.

Whats funny is that he ended up buying a 2013 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid. For a grampa car it wasn't bad!

We only have the 2008 Chevy TrailBlazer. MPG is not great but the 5.2 is pretty fun when ya hit the skinny pedal.

Mazda CX-5. You might be able to find a used 2013 AWD for around $21K/$22K. Non-AWD would obviously be less.

ETA - I own a Mazda 6 and absolutely love it. Different kind of vehicle, of course, but I drove a CX-5 and it's a fun vehicle that gets great mileage. I'll be honest - I'm a Mazda fanboi. My wife and I have owned something like 8 or 9 Mazdas between us and they've all been great.

Auto Trader.Com Got my best deal ever. The car 2003 Hyundai XG 350L. got it 3 years old with a couple dents. Price 4000.00. Still driving, and its the best car I've ever owned.

I'm gonna' be going down this road by the end of the year. My Explorer has 153,000 miles on it. It needs some minor work, but it runs pretty damn well. Hell, it should; I've damn near rebuilt the whole thing over the last two years. I paid cash for it in 2004.

The downside is that it only gets about 17 mpg. I do a lot of driving, so I need something a bit more robust in that department.

I've looked at Subaru but, yeah, they're not cheap. I'll probably end up just buying my brother's company car when its lease is up. It ain't sexy; a Chevy Cruze, but the thing gets 34 mpg. The leasing company always offers the cars for sale to the employees. It'll probably be around ten grand. In all honesty, after doing my gear upgrades, that'll start approaching my pain threshold for buying a car...

Considering Runnah's needs, this is where I'd start. Then maybe the Mini Countryman. Didnt notice the budget, but there's the X1, Q3, Forrester XT.

I own a WRX and I'm considering going to a more commuter friendly A3 TDI.


You really only need to buy 2 tires at once with an AWD car; the difference front to back matters little; it's the side to side.
