Personally, I feel like the 30d and d80 are the best value running. 699$ brand new, and if you go into a shop like ritz/wolf that offers good warranties you're covered for a long time.
Let's face it, "older" tech or no, either are still going to take top-quality images for a beginner through to a semi-pro level.
