Looking for advice -- travelling to Portland soon

I'll be spending 10 days in Portland starting this Friday. Two reasons for my trip: the Celtics-Blazers game on the 30th, and taking pictures. I don't have a photography "style" per se... I'm sort of a walkaround shooter.

So, taking into account photography to a certain point, here are a few questions for y'all Portlanders:

- What are the must-visit places outside of the tourist circuit?
- What would be the best destination for a short trip (leaving Portland and returning on the same day)?
- Huge Elliott Smith fan here. Is there any memorial somewhere in town?
- In terms of safety, is there any part of town that I should avoid? (Don't want my gear stolen

)
- Finally, do you guys know if cameras other than P&S are allowed in the Rose Garden? Can I wear Celtic green without being lynched?

Here's hoping the snow melts before I arrive. I'm surrounded by the white stuff 4-5 months a year, don't want to see any more of it!
