Looking for my first DSLR? under 1000

i am lookin for my first dslr and im lookin to spend under 1000, i want to use it for both video and photos, what can u recommend? ive been lookin at the t4i/650d and the d7000, what do you guys think?

Go to a store. Handle both of them. One will feel right to you. One won't.
Both are great cameras. I haven't really looked closely at the T4i as opposed to the D7000, but being a Canon shooter my instinct is actually to say the D7000 because of the poor design of changing aperture on the Rebel line. On the quick snapsort comparison the D7000 still looks better in terms of PHOTOGRAPHY. The T4i looks better in terms of gimmicks.

Both of those are fine APS-C cameras! You can NOT GO TOO FAR wrong with either a decent Canon or a decent Nikon. I prefer the Nikon control ethos and the Nikon design philosophy, buuuuut....Canon's consumer/enthusiast cameras have many fine features, and are very capable. Ford vs Chevy. Rolling Rock vs Molson. Dial vs Irish Spring. Coke vs Pepsi---both get you there, both can haul your divorced buddy's chit to his new place; both get you drunk and wash down pizza slices; both get you clean; and both give you diabetes when drunk in excess. Same with the whole Canon vs Nikon deal.

I think the REAL question is, again, Rolling Rock vs. Molson...save your pennies, or support the Canadian economy???

The D7000's sensor is supposed to have much better dynamic range and tonal range according to DxO Mark website's sensor test chart, so I'd definitely go with that one if I were to choose.
Photographer and scene being the same, makes sense to use the camera that will give you better colors.

There are LOTS of sub-$1000 DSLRs that are great. But which one is best for you depends entirely on how you plan to use it. You said you want to use it for both video and photo -- but didn't mention what types of shots (e.g. sports/action, landscapes, architecture, etc.)

For photos, the D7000 is probably the better camera (even though the Nikon is a bit older and the T4i is a brand new model.)

For videos, the T4i is probably the better camera -- it has several features that are nice for video including the swing-out LCD, the ability to use Canon's new "STM" lenses (and I believe the T4i / 650D is the currently only body that supports the silent mode on these lenses.) There are only two lenses released so far... an 18-135mm zoom and a 40mm "pancake" prime. Although the lenses are designed to be so quiet that the built-in mic wont pick up any noise from the lenses, if you're heavily into video you'll probably end up wanting a higher quality mic than a built-in mic. E.g. the Rode VideoMics are pretty popular.

I have the T1i. It's a very capable camera and I love it. You can get it on amazon for $600.

If I was in your shoes, i'd buy a entry level camera and better glass since (im assuming your learning). The kit lens is a capable lens dont get me wrong, but if your budget allows you to get better glass why not.

D7000 or the D3200... Should be able to acquire a D7000 with an 18-55 mm lense. Good beginning combo.
