Looking for opinions

Hi. New to forum, so I don't know if this has been asked 100k times....So I'll ask and hope I don't get yelled at.

I use a Mac Book Pro, and was wondering what you guys use to store photos in lieu of keeping them in iphoto..I'm sure you will all say an external hard drive, but I was just curious as to other options..

Also the way I download is thru image capture, then onto desktop or a file for editing. Most efficient way?

I would recommend doing both. I had a 2tb external that DIED and I screamed for months. Fortunately a vast majority of my images were in my iPhoto folder and in my Lightroom catalogue. I was able to do screen shots of the images from Lightroom. Also, I reached out to my clients and asked for a copy of the cd that was made for them. Another way to preserve your images is to upload them to your own website. I too use Mac (iMac) after PC FAILED me. Good luck.

Yep, external hard drives work well for storage, however a major consideration is also having storage space for backups of the image files.

I believe iPhoto simply accesses the computers file management structure rather than storing the photos in the iPhoto image editing software. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhoto

AaronM; I actually stopped using iPhoto. Right now my photos are in folders, and I have a Time Capsule. I just wanted to be able to sort my photos manually.

Yes! You must use redundant drives. I have three copies of everything, spread over different drives. Taking the time to manage backups is an essential discipline.

The truest thing you can say about digital media: If you only have one copy the day will come when you will have no copies.

I had a computer power supply blow out an internal hard drive, external hardrive, and external DVD recorder. What has been reliable for me has been the large thumb drives 64 gig and the solid state drives with no moving parts.
