Hi,

i'm looking to buy a Nikon DLSR, have used a D80 a lot but now i want a new one, i was thinking about D90, do you have any ideas about something equivalent (price/features/quality). I am also considering a Canon, but don't know their models by name.

thanks,
gavu

Welcome to the forum. Stay a while. I have heard good things about the D80 and I like the price. There is a D80 body on East Texas Craigslist for $300. I would still probably opt for a refurbished D90. There is a ton of user support and great used accessories available for the D90.

What kind of photography do you like to do? Landscapes? People? Cars? Nature? Sports?

The D90 is a nice entry-level camera. You get one with a kit lens Nikon D90 12.3MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens

Or you can buy just the D90 body if you want a different lens(s) Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

Nikon's most recently launched camera, the D7000 is redefining the top end of the entry-level market segment Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR with 3.0-Inch LCD (Body Only) by having a new image sensor and many of the features found before only at the Prosumer market level.

Thew D7000 is also available as a kit Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED Nikkor Lens

I also had a D80 as my first SLR and I moved up to a D90 a year later. I loved the upgrade at the time and it's definitely a camera worth buying. A few things I didn't like about it though:

•The framerate. I shoot sports and the D90 only shoots at 4.5 fps
•The ISO doesn't look good past 1600
•The 11 point auto-focus system don't focus on my subject a lot of times when I'm trying to focus on something other than directly in the center of my frame

Just this week I moved on from the D90 and am now getting the new Nikon D7000. I paid $1,099 for a refurbished model. That's how I got my D90 as well ($770 refurbished from Adorama in December, 2009). From reading the reviews, the D7000 just seems amazing and well worth the extra money compared to the price of a D90.
