To be honest, I have no knowledge of the upper level Canons. I was really hoping a t1i kit would have been enough, but I know that it's not. Wouldn't that be awesome if you could get an incredible camera plus a nice lens for under 800 bucks?

Ah, the 5D(markII) is actually $1000 more than the 7D. In that case, I'd go for the 7D for now... Or maybe even the T2i to save some money, then upgrade when you're ready.

Well don't under sell the value of the lower level cameras... My step mother has the T1i & the picture quality is fine.

I just feel like if I know I will eventually upgrade from a t2i to a 7D or something, I might as well buy now. I know you can get a decent amount of money by selling a used camera, but I think I should just spend my coins on something decent to start off with.

If you put a good lens on a 7D and on the t1i (same lens) would you be able to tell easily which camera took each shot? Doesn't the t2i have a lot of the same aspects of the 7D, but without the metering and other things?

yes the 7D and the T2I have alot of the same features but the 7D is IMO a better feeling camera and is weather resistant and has two processors

I don't think you could but if you were to blow the pic up yes you could and the 7D is supposed to be better with noise at higher ISO

If you had $1,500 in hand and your goal was to get the best camera + IQ possible, which of these 3 would be ideal? I am sure I will step it up to some $1k+ lenses in the future, but I need a camera to get started.

My first advice is to put image quality aside for a second - its very iffy term and hard to put a set figure on.

First you need to define for yourself your key interest areas with regard to photography - or if you have any at all. Do you have an interest in macro, birds, street, abstract, portrait, weddings etc.... Defining your key interest areas starts to give you working conditions and an idea of your rough output - it gives you criteria with which you can start to sift and compare the bodies with. Just comparing them with no criteria and with no experience means that the higher level (most expensive) body is always going to win.

Secondly I would strongly point out that good glass is essential to most forms of photography (along of course with good lighting and good photographic skill). To help emphasise this point have a look at these shots on this site:

Some are taken with a top range DSLR - some with a midrange and some with an entry level. The key similarity between them though is the good photographer - the good light and the good pro quality lens used.

I want to take pictures of my family, as well as outdoors stuff. I don't think I will ever shoot more than 2 or 3 fps, but who knows.
