Lumix LX5 or Nikon D40

I love taking photos and decided to buy a Nikon D40. This was a year ago. I'm really busy and I think I've used the it 5 times. I have an Exilim that's always in my purse since it's compact and light I can carry it all the time.

My friend wants to buy the D40 and I've been looking at cameras (still a newbie with photography). I really like the LX5 and I'm contemplating of I should keep the d40 or buy the LX5? Help?
