LYCRO anyone?

I've never played with one, but... ::GASP:: I'd love to. (I KNOW! THE HOOOOOORROR of it all!!!).

Unfortunately the price tag is a little too steep for me to be able to just throw down for a "fun toy" right now, There are other things I actually *need* ahead of this lil' doohicky... however... some day... down the line... when I find myself with a couple hundred and nothing I need to spend it on, nothing I need to save for, and a little bit of boredom... I may get one just for fun's sake. :lmao:

Anyone that isn't amazed by the lytro doesn't understand it, and anybody that wants one also doesn't understand it.

Its sort of like the first consumer digital cameras of the early 90s.

I understand the technology. I knew some of the people who developed it at Stanford and started Lytro (originally called Refocus Imaging). The technology is real and has intriguing applications. I'm less convinced by the consumer embodiment currently on sale.

It's new technology, give it a bit of time before dismissing it outright. This kind of stuff is interesting and challenging and who knows where it could lead. Sure it is pretty limited now but let your imagination run for a bit, this could be phenomenal.

I remember when the first laser rangefinders came to surveying, they were big, they were expensive, they gobbled up power and they were not all that accurate. Now you can get a laser 3D scanner to scan the inside of a plant and with software generate a 3D ACAD drawing in the time it takes to make a pot of coffee, a task that might have required 3 weeks of work 10 years ago.

The first functioning GPS receiver I saw was made by Collins and was the size of a semi trailer. As young engineering students at the time some in the class scoffed at the very idea of anything like that ever being of any real practical use. Now the things are the size of a microchip and are everywhere being used in ways never even imagined at the time.

That's really exciting that you know someone involved in the development off the Lytro. The technology we advance to grows by leaps and bounds almost every MONTH that goes by! As usual, the first of a product is a novelty, and it almost always improved on quickly and a new model introduced. I think the technology is amazing and I look forward to every step closer we get to capture what we really see. Deb
